Black and White
Gerco de Ruijter’s landscape photographs present an original look at the world. The structures in the (Dutch) landscape are recognizable: water / land, open areas opposite dense growth, the sometimes somewhat accidental terrain with old and new traces of human activity.
Everything is photographed from above with the utmost precision. What demands attention in this landscape are the hidden details, showing up it seems by coincidence: an oarsman who leaves a trail in the water, cattle that cluster in a wide and empty space, a low flying swan with its inseparable shadow.
It is this coincidence which, thanks to handed down principles of perfect technical reproduction, handsome composition and rich black and white nuances, give these quite small images a vulnerable and poetic power.
